This 8 by 10 inch glass negative shows the Fort Street Presbyterian Church and the Union Railroad Station, two landmarks that stood close together on Fort Street in Detroit. The Union Station served several rail lines from one terminal, which made it a busy hub for travelers arriving in the city. The plate dates from roughly 1900 to 1910, a period when Detroit's downtown was expanding quickly alongside its growing manufacturing economy. The Detroit Publishing Company made many views of American cities during these years, and its large-format plates capture the masonry and street detail of the period.
