Few of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of the city's railroads show the inside of a building, so this interior of a Grand Trunk Western Railroad ticket office stands apart from the exterior and street scenes around it. The Grand Trunk Western was the American arm of the Canadian Grand Trunk Railway, and its Detroit operations tied the city to lines running into Canada and across the Midwest. The picture survives as an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative, a format that recorded fine detail in interiors where light was limited. The company made its images between roughly 1890 and 1924, and this one dates from the years between 1905 and 1915.
