A ticket office interior, rather than an exterior view of a station, is the particular focus here: a Grand Trunk Western Railroad counter in Detroit, shown as a working room where travelers bought passage. The Grand Trunk Western operated lines in the Detroit area, and its ticket offices were busy places where clerks handled fares and schedules for passengers heading across Michigan and beyond. The picture was made on an 8 x 10 inch glass negative between about 1905 and 1915, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting the city and its surrounding region. Interior views like this one are less common than station exteriors, so they offer a useful glimpse of how railroad business was conducted in the early twentieth century.
