East Grand Boulevard, a broad residential thoroughfare on Detroit's east side, is the subject of this 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which began in the 1890s and became known for its photographs and color prints of American places, made many street views like this one in the years before 1920. Boulevards of this kind, with their generous width and large houses, reflect the prosperity that came to Detroit as the city's manufacturing and automobile industries expanded. The negative reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
