Washington Boulevard, a central downtown Detroit street, is identified here by two hotels: the Statler at left and the Book-Cadillac at far right. The Statler opened in 1915 as a luxury hotel, and the Book-Cadillac followed in 1924, so the block reflects the city's rapid growth during the automobile boom. This view survives as a glass negative copied from an existing print, a common way images from the Detroit Publishing Company were preserved. The title was devised by the cataloger, so the buildings are the main clues to the scene.
