Washington Boulevard was one of Detroit's showpiece thoroughfares in the early 1900s, a broad street lined with commercial buildings that ran through the city's downtown core. This glass negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company between 1900 and 1910, captures that stretch of street at a time when the company was documenting American cities for its photographic catalog and promotional sales. The company's work, later preserved in the Library of Congress, offers a useful record of how urban streets looked and functioned before the automobile dominated them. Its subjects here include the storefronts and open plaza space that defined the boulevard's commercial life.
