The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that produced views of American cities and landscapes, recorded the revenue cutter *Morrill* at Detroit in a glass-plate negative made sometime between 1900 and 1910. The U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, which operated under the Treasury Department, enforced customs and maritime law on the nation's coasts and inland waters, and its cutters were a familiar sight on the Detroit River, one of the busiest shipping routes in the Great Lakes region. The company's large 8 x 10 inch negatives captured fine detail in the vessel's hull and rigging, giving a clear record of a working federal ship at a busy port.
