The Ford Sales Office in the Boulevard Building shows the company's downtown Detroit presence in the years when Ford was expanding rapidly, roughly from the early Model T era through the 1910s. Although the record dates the negative only to between 1905 and 1920, the period matches Ford's rise from a small automaker to one of the largest manufacturers in the country. The picture was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American cities and landscapes for sale. Its plain architectural view of a business building reflects how much of the company's work recorded the everyday commercial face of growing cities.
