The Wayne County Building, shown here under the title "Wayne County Court House," anchored the civic center in downtown Detroit for much of the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed American cities and landmarks from about 1890 to 1924, made this glass-plate negative sometime between 1902 and 1910, a period when Detroit was growing quickly on the strength of its automobile industry. Government buildings like this one were often photographed as symbols of civic pride, and the large 8 by 10 inch format captures fine architectural detail in the masonry and façade.
