The Detroit Opera House stands out in this view as one of the city's principal venues for touring opera, theater, and concerts in the years before 1910, when Detroit's population and wealth were growing quickly. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and landscapes from the 1890s into the 1920s, made the photograph as a large glass negative, an 8 x 10 inch format that records fine architectural detail. Such plates were the standard medium for topographical work of this period, and the company's views were widely sold as postcards and prints.
