The Russell House was a hotel in Detroit, and this view records the building as it stood in the decades before 1915, when hotels were central to the city's growing downtown trade. The negative is an 8 x 10 inch glass plate, the large format that Detroit Publishing Company photographers used for their architectural and street views. The company, run by William A. Livingstone and Edwin H. Husher, sold these scenes as prints and as hand-colored photochromes, so its images give a wide record of American cities at the turn of the century. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
