The cafe at the Russell House, a Detroit hotel, offers a view into the public dining rooms that large hotels maintained for travelers and local residents alike. The picture is a dry plate glass negative, an 8 by 10 inch format that was standard for commercial photographers of the period. It was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American cities, resorts, and landmarks from roughly the 1890s into the 1920s. The company's catalog of views, of which this is one, documents how city life and commercial spaces were presented to the public in those decades.
