A modest frame dwelling at 299 River Road is the subject of this glass negative, which the title identifies as the oldest house in Detroit. The street ran along the Detroit River, where the city began as a French outpost founded in 1701, so the house stands in one of the earliest settled parts of the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which operated from the 1890s into the 1920s, made large-format views like this one to document American towns and streets during the years between 1900 and 1915. Its record of the house is a useful glimpse of a neighborhood that was changing quickly as the city grew around the river.
