The camera is pointed at the auditorium of the Detroit Opera House itself, not at its street front, which makes this a rare view of the hall's interior for the period. The negative is a mammoth glass plate, 18 by 22 inches, made by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose successor firm, the Detroit Publishing Company, sold views of American cities and landscapes around 1900. Large plates like this captured fine detail in tiers, balconies, and decorative plasterwork, which made them useful for showing a theater's architecture to readers and to the building's managers. The plate reached the Library of Congress by way of a 1949 gift to the State Historical Society of Colorado.
