Few photographs from this era show the inside of a retail shop as clearly as this 8 x 10 inch glass negative of the Wright Kay & Co. jewelry store in Detroit. Its display cases, counters, and fittings reflect how downtown merchants arranged goods for customers in the early 1900s, when store interiors were often elaborate. The view was made between 1905 and 1915 by the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced commercial photographs of American cities and businesses and sold them as postcards and prints. Because the company documented so many local firms, its negatives remain useful for studying urban commerce and interior design of the period.
