Mission-style oak chairs fill the sales floor of the Pringle Furniture Company in Detroit, a store interior captured on an 8 by 10 inch glass negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued this view as number 1146, operated from the 1890s into the 1920s and documented the city's streets, businesses, and industries for commercial sale. Mission furniture, with its plain, square-lined oak frames, grew popular in the early 1900s as part of the Arts and Crafts movement, and a showroom like this one shows how retailers displayed the style to shoppers of the period. The title was partly supplied by the cataloger, and the negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
