Rows of choristers in vestments stand arranged inside St. Mary's Mission in Detroit, and the robes and formal grouping mark this as a posed portrait of a church choir rather than a candid moment. Vested choirs, with their surplices and cassocks, were a familiar part of worship in many churches in this period, and a group like this would have represented the mission congregation to visitors and neighbors. The picture is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views, made by a commercial firm that photographed churches, streets and civic life in Detroit and beyond around 1900 to 1910. Its large glass negative preserves fine detail in the interior and in the faces of the singers.
