Carnations filled this interior, which the Detroit Publishing Company recorded as a general view of an American Carnation Society exhibition in Detroit, Michigan. The society, founded in 1891, promoted the flower through growers' shows and conventions, and its exhibitions drew commercial growers who displayed their finest blooms in rows and banks for judges and visitors. The company, based in Detroit, issued views of American cities and attractions in the early twentieth century, so the picture also records how a trade event was staged and presented to the public. The glass negative dates from roughly 1900 to 1905.
