First prize went to the 'Enchantress' carnation, a daybreak-pink variety, at an American Carnation Society exhibition in Detroit. Carnations were among the most popular cut flowers of the early 1900s, and the society's shows let growers compete for ribbons and display new varieties. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm that photographed American towns, landscapes and events, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative in these years, and its views of public gatherings are now valued as records of everyday life.
