A first-prize award at the American Carnation Society's Detroit exhibition, credited to J.B. Valentine, is the focus of this view. The society, founded in 1891, staged shows where growers displayed their best blooms, and carnations were among the most popular cut flowers in the United States in the early 1900s. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose large-format plates documented American cities and events in that era. Dated between 1900 and 1905, it captures a time when flower shows drew large crowds.
