Few interior views of early Detroit theaters survive, which makes this glass negative of the Temple theater a useful record of a public space that otherwise lives on only in memory. The Detroit Publishing Company made its name in the years around 1900 by documenting American cities, landscapes, and buildings, and its large-format plates were often used for commercial promotion. Photographs like this one were taken before electric lighting and cinema reshaped the typical theater, so the arrangement of seating, balconies, and decorative plasterwork offers a look at how live performance halls were designed at the turn of the century.
