Here the Miles theater shares the frame with Capitol Square Park, the downtown green space named in the record, which places the building within the public life of the square. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed American towns, streets and landmarks in the decades around 1900. Views like this one show how a city's theater district and open squares looked before later automobile traffic reshaped downtown streets. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
