Cheboygan, a lumber town at the mouth of the Cheboygan River on Lake Huron, is the setting here, with a Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company steamer tied up at the wharf and passengers gathered on the dock. The company ran passenger boats along the Great Lakes, and steamers like this one were a main link between small northern Michigan ports and larger cities before good roads and rail service arrived. The photograph comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American towns and waterways in the years around 1900 and 1910.
