Steamers lying at the Detroit and Cleveland Navigation Company dock give this view its particular focus, showing the passenger boats that linked Cleveland with Detroit across Lake Erie and beyond. The company ran large side-wheel and propeller steamers on overnight and day runs, and its Cleveland pier was a busy point of departure for travelers, freight and holiday excursions. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative between 1900 and 1915, worked to document American cities, rivers and waterfronts for commercial sale. Its scenes of working lake traffic are valued today for recording the steamboat era just before motor vehicles and rail reshaped Great Lakes travel.
