This interior view shows the drive shafting being installed for a new steamer of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company, a line that ran passenger boats across the Great Lakes between Detroit and Cleveland. The record places the work at Wyandotte, Michigan, a Detroit River town with a long shipbuilding tradition, and suggests the vessel was probably the *City of Cleveland*. Shafting like this carried power from the engines to the propeller, so it was among the most important parts of a steamboat's machinery. The picture is one of the Detroit Publishing Company's large glass-plate negatives, made around 1907 when the company was documenting American industry and travel.
