The steamer Juniata, pictured here at Detroit, was one of many vessels that carried freight and passengers through the Detroit River and the wider Great Lakes system in the early twentieth century. This 8 by 10 inch glass negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced a large body of commercial views of the city and its waterfront, likely made between 1900 and 1915. Firms like this one sold such scenes as postcards and souvenirs, so the picture also records how working harbor life looked before motor trucks and highways took over much of the region's shipping. The plate was given to the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1949 and later came to the Library of Congress.
