The subject is the steamer *Britannia*, photographed at Detroit, where passenger and freight steamers moved along the Detroit River and across the Great Lakes in the early 1900s. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the picture, built a large body of views of the city's streets, waterfront, and shipping in these years, and this 8 by 10 inch glass negative captures that working river traffic at a time when steamboats were still central to travel and trade in the region. The negative reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
