The name painted on the bow, "City of Cleveland," identifies this as one of the passenger steamers of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company, which ran overnight service across Lake Erie between Detroit and Cleveland. The stenciled "U.S. Mail" marks the ship as a carrier of federal mail, a role that gave these lake steamers a dependable place in the region's travel and commerce. The glass negative dates from roughly 1907 to 1915, when the Detroit Publishing Company was documenting steamboats and waterfront life across the country, and the ship's broad decks and white superstructure show the handsome side-wheel style of the era.
