The gas holder at the center of this view belonged to the Detroit City Gas Company's Station A, one of the works that turned coal into the manufactured gas used for lighting and cooking in the city before natural gas became common. Such holders were large steel tanks that rose and fell with the volume of gas they stored, so their height told a plant worker how much fuel was on hand. The Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for documenting American cities in the early twentieth century, made the picture, and its caption card dates it to May 18, 1912. The catalog data is marked as unverified, so the date is best treated as the card's claim rather than a confirmed fact.
