A large circular excavation and concrete foundation, prepared for a new gas holder for the Detroit City Gas Company, is the subject of this glass-plate negative. Gas holders were steel tanks that stored manufactured coal gas until it was needed, and their masonry bases had to be heavy and level to carry the weight of the tank. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented the city and the region in the early twentieth century, made the negative, and its industrial views like this one record the infrastructure that quietly supplied city homes and businesses. The date is an estimate of about 1912.
