Work on the foundation for a gas holder at a Detroit City Gas Company site, dated April 4, 1912, documents the groundwork laid before a storage tank could rise. Gas holders stored manufactured gas to even out demand, and their large circular footings had to carry the weight of the tank and its contents. The glass negative belongs to the Detroit Publishing Company's broad collection of city and industrial views from the early twentieth century, and it reached the Library of Congress through a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
