Few places in Detroit have been as central to the city's life as Campus Martius, the open square at the heart of the downtown street plan that Judge Augustus Woodward laid out after the 1805 fire. This wide glass negative shows the square alongside Detroit City Hall, which stood on the grounds and housed municipal government for decades. The date is an estimate, placed between 1900 and 1920 by comparison with a related view, so the scene likely reflects the early twentieth century. The panoramic format takes in the full sweep of the square and the buildings around it.
