The left third of a three-part panorama, this view shows the Campus Martius, the open plaza at the heart of downtown Detroit where Woodward, Michigan and Monroe avenues meet. The Detroit Publishing Company made wide views like this around 1900 to capture whole streets and squares, with shops, trolleys and pedestrians in one frame. Because the center and right sections are not held with it, the scene survives only in part, but the commercial buildings around the square still show how the city's business district looked in the early 1900s.
