The view centers on the Civil War monument in Campus Martius, the open downtown square in Detroit, with the Majestic Building filling the left edge of the frame. The monument was raised after the war to honor local soldiers and sailors, and it became a focal point for ceremonies and gatherings in the city's core. This is a dry plate glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century. Its catalog date falls between 1900 and 1915, a period when streetcars, commercial blocks, and public squares were changing the look of downtown Detroit.
