The fountain at the center of this view is the Bagley Memorial, a monument to Michigan governor John J. Bagley that anchors the Campus Martius square where several downtown streets converge. Old City Hall stands at the left edge, and the open plaza around the fountain shows how the square doubled as a civic gathering place and a busy commercial corner. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and landscapes in the early 1900s, so the picture captures the downtown streetscape of that period.
