Campus Martius, the open square at the heart of downtown Detroit, is the focus of this view, with the Detroit Opera House standing among the commercial buildings that lined it. The glass negative measures 8 by 10 inches, and its catalog notes suggest it is the left portion of a wider panorama, with the right section recorded separately. The Detroit Publishing Company made sweeping views like this in the early 1900s to document city streets and squares during a period of rapid urban growth. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
