This picture shows the machine shop floor where long steel shafting was prepared for a new steamer of the Detroit & Cleveland Navigation Company, the line that ran passenger boats between Detroit and Cleveland on Lake Erie and the Detroit River. The record links it to the steamboat *City of Cleveland* and places it in Wyandotte, a shipbuilding and industrial town downriver from Detroit. Shafting carried power from the engines to the propellers, so the work was heavy and exacting. The image was made as a large glass-plate negative by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographs documented Michigan's industries and cities in the early 1900s.
