Along Detroit's riverfront, this view shows a working shoreline where cargo ships tied up to handle the freight moving through one of the Great Lakes' busiest ports. The image comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that photographed and sold views of American cities and landscapes in the early twentieth century. Its glass negatives, dated roughly between 1900 and 1910, record a period when lake shipping, carrying iron ore, coal and grain, was central to Detroit's growth as an industrial center. Scenes like this preserve how the waterfront looked before later changes reshaped it.
