Vase labels in this view identify the roses as Madame Chatenay, a cultivar staged among the displays at an American Carnation Society exhibition in Detroit. The society's shows drew growers and florists from across the country, and although the group was named for carnations, roses were a prominent part of the trade and its exhibitions. The 8 x 10 inch glass negative dates from about 1900 to 1905, when the Detroit Publishing Company was photographing the city and its events. Its arrangement of blooms and labels offers a clear record of how cut flowers were presented to judges and visitors in that period.
