Rather than a street front, this glass negative records the inside of the general offices of the Whitney Warner Publishing Co., a Detroit firm in the music trade. Around 1900, sheet music was a major commercial product, sold in large quantities to households with pianos and to dealers across the country, and an interior view like this one shows the clerical work that kept such a business running. The 8 by 10 inch format captured fine detail in a room's desks, shelving, and fittings. Detroit Publishing Company photographs of this period were made to show the city's commercial life, so the picture documents local industry as well as one company.
