Interior views of working businesses are less common than street scenes from this period, which makes this glass negative of the offices of Mulford & Petry Co., an advertising agency, worth a closer look. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made the view sometime between 1900 and 1910, was known for documenting the city's streets, buildings and industry, and its large 8 by 10 inch negatives recorded fine detail in rooms like this one. The desks, layout and furnishings offer a sense of how commercial workplaces were arranged in the early twentieth century, when advertising was growing into a major business in American cities.
