The assembling room of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company, photographed in November 1903, is a view inside one of Detroit's precision machine shops at a time when the car business was taking shape around such firms. Henry Leland and Robert Faulconer's company made machined parts, and Leland's later work with Cadillac tied the firm to the automobile's rise. Interior views like this one show how factory work was organized as parts became more standardized. The glass negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers recorded the city's factories, streets, and waterfront in the same period.
