Standing beside a large metal wheel and a jumble of machine parts, a lone worker anchors this 8 x 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Shipbuilding Co., probably photographed in Wyandotte, Michigan. The catalog record is unsure whether the room was a scratch room or a scrap room, but either name points to the yard's bulk materials and salvage. The Detroit Publishing Company made such large-format views of industrial sites in the decade before 1920, when the Detroit River towns were busy turning out lake freighters and other steel vessels. The glass plate preserves the dark, cluttered interior in fine detail.
