The choir in this glass-plate negative wears vestments, the formal robes worn by church singers, and is posed inside St. Mary's Mission in Detroit. The Detroit Publishing Company, which worked from the 1890s into the 1920s, made many views of American cities and their institutions, and the record dates this one to roughly 1900 to 1910. Group portraits like this one show how congregational music was organized and presented in that era, and the interior setting gives a sense of the church spaces where such choirs performed.
