The Michigan Central tunnel carries trains beneath the Detroit River to Windsor, Ontario, and its portal and approaches show the railroad's ambitions in this stretch of the city. The line opened around 1910, and it was among the early American rail tunnels to run electric locomotives, chosen to keep smoke and steam out of an enclosed bore. Made by the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented the city and region in the years before the First World War, the picture captures a major piece of Detroit's rail infrastructure at the start of its working life.
