This glass negative records the Ford Motor Company in Detroit, one of the industrial sites that drew the Detroit Publishing Company's cameras in the decade before 1920. The city was then becoming the center of American automobile manufacturing, and Ford's expanding operations were reshaping its factories, workforce, and streets. The Detroit Publishing Company produced large-format views of American cities and landscapes, and its 8 x 10 inch negatives captured the scale of industrial work in this period. Its catalog numbers and the 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado show how the collection traveled before reaching the Library of Congress.
