The name on the front, Edelweiss, is an Alpine flower, and a Detroit cafe carrying it before 1915 points to the city's large German community, which gave many of its commercial streets a Germanic character. The picture is an 8 by 10 inch glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American cities and landscapes in the early 1900s and sold its views as postcards and prints. Because the format is large, the negative holds fine detail, so the storefronts and street around the cafe can still be read more than a century later.
