The entrance plaque at Northwestern High School in Detroit is the focus of this view, and its inscription, which the record gives as "AD 1911," helps date the photograph. Detroit's public schools expanded quickly in the early twentieth century as the city grew rapidly, and the firm Malcomson & Higginbotham, named in the record, was among the architects designing school buildings there in that period. The Detroit Publishing Company made this glass negative as part of its broad effort to document American cities and landmarks, so the picture also shows how a public school presented itself to students and visitors more than a century ago.
