Central High School in Detroit is the subject here, a civic school building photographed at a time when the city was expanding its public education system. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, landmarks and everyday life in the early 1900s. Its date is an estimate, given with a question mark, so the photograph is best read as a record of the building and its surroundings around the turn of the twentieth century.
