The Russell House, a Detroit hotel, sits in view of the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, which places this view in the city's downtown plaza area at Campus Martius. The monument honors Michigan men who served in the Civil War, a conflict that shaped Detroit's civic life in the decades after 1865. This glass dry plate negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers documented American cities and streetscapes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its estimated date of 1880 to 1905 makes it a useful record of the downtown streetscape before the early twentieth century rebuilt much of it.
